Cable Management for Your Desk: From Chaos to Clean in an Afternoon

Cable boxes, cord clips and cable sleeves — how to tackle every cable mess type.

A desk with tangled cables is harder to clean and harder to concentrate at. The good news: most cable mess can be solved with three products used in the right order.

Step 1 — Gather cables with a cable sleeve or box

A cable management box sits on or under the desk and hides the power strip plus excess cord length. A cable sleeve bundles multiple cords running along the same path into one tidy tube. Start here to remove the bulk of the visual chaos.

Step 2 — Route with adhesive cable clips

Stick cable clips along the underside of the desk or along the wall to route individual cables cleanly from device to power source. J-hooks and adhesive clips work well on wood desks. Cable raceways (flat channels) are better for walls and baseboards.

Step 3 — Label at the plug

Once cables are routed, add a cable label or colored clip at each plug end so you can identify which cord powers which device without tracing the full run. Saves time every time you add or move a device.

Under-desk vs. desktop management

Under-desk cable trays mount to the desk underside and hold the power strip and excess cord — the neatest solution. Desktop cable organizers are easier to install and work well for monitor cables, phone cables and headphones. Use both for a full setup.

Before you shop

Count your cables and measure the longest run. Check adhesive strength ratings in reviews — cheap clips lose grip on painted walls or lacquered wood within weeks.
